As Mardi Gras celebrations get underway in New Orleans, Shia LaBeouf is facing criminal charges in The Big Easy.
The controversial actor and former child star was arrested in New Orleans on Tuesday, Feb. 17, for a pair of alleged assaults, the New Orleans Police Department confirmed to USA TODAY.
This comes after LaBeouf, 39, had been spotted hanging out in the NOLA area over the weekend and frequenting various bars for the city's annual Mardi Gras celebration, according to The Hollywood Reporter and TMZ.
According to police, officers were called to the 1400 block of Royal Street at approximately 12:45 a.m. after two men reported being assaulted. Investigators said LaBeouf was reportedly "causing a disturbance and becoming increasing[ly] aggressive" at a nearby business.

The "Megalopolis" star later was taken to a hospital for "treatment of unknown injuries," police added, and subsequently arrested and charged with two counts of simple battery.
Details about LaBeouf's custody status were not immediately available. USA TODAY has reached out to the actor's representatives for comment.

Why did Shia LaBeouf get arrested?
Following LaBeouf's allegedly disorderly conduct at a local business, a staff member attempted to remove the actor from the establishment, New Orleans police confirmed to USA TODAY.
After he was removed, the Disney Channel alum reportedly struck a man in the vicinity, using his closed fists on the victim several times, authorities noted.
LaBeouf briefly left the area, per police, but then returned and began acting "even more aggressive." While several bystanders attempted to hold him down, he allegedly struck the same man a second time, also with closed fists, in the victim's upper body.
Additionally, the actor assaulted another man by punching him in the nose, according to police. LaBeouf was restrained again until authorities arrived, after which he was taken to a hospital for treatment.

TMZ, which spoke with an eyewitness at the scene, obtained footage that seemingly showed the actor being transferred by paramedics.
Prior to his arrest, LaBeouf had reportedly been on an "extended weekend bar crawl" in New Orleans since Thursday, employees from several drinking establishments told The Hollywood Reporter.
Robert Skuse, a doorman at dive bar Ms. Mae's, told the outlet that LaBeouf seemed "inebriated" and "somewhat belligerent" during a Sunday night appearance at the establishment. LaBeouf, who came shirtless and without cash, was reportedly asked to leave after he tried to be a "celebrity bartender."
Shia LaBeouf's history of legal troubles
This isn't the first time LaBeouf has landed in legal trouble.
The "Transformers" star has been charged with multiple instances of disorderly conduct and physical assault over the years. In 2014, LaBeouf pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct after an incident at a Broadway show.
Similarly, in 2017, the actor was arrested in Savannah, Georgia, on charges of public intoxication, disorderly conduct and obstruction (the intoxication charge was later dropped, but LaBeouf pleaded guilty to the remaining charges).
And in 2020, LaBeouf was dealt a pair of misdemeanor charges (petty theft and battery) after he allegedly used "force and violence against a man" during an incident in Los Angeles, per Entertainment Tonight.
In his personal life, LaBeouf was sued by former girlfriend FKA Twigs in December 2020 after the British singer and actress accused him of repeated physical, emotional and mental abuse during their nearly yearlong relationship. The pair settled the lawsuit last July.
