The witchy 1998 classic Practical Magic, starring Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock, is getting a part two. The leading ladies are “in negotiations” to come back as their characters, sister witches Sally (Bullock) and Gillian (Kidman), according to Deadline.
In June 2024, the official Warner Bros. Pictures Instagram account confirmed plans for the film’s sequel. The brand shared a series of memes made with scenes from the original movie, starting the carousel with a clip of Sally running and jumping into Michael’s (Mark Feuerstein) arms for a kiss.
In May 2025, Warner Bros. confirmed a Sept. 18, 2026 release date for the film. “It’s official! Practical Magic 2 is in development and coming soon. 🌟🧙♀️,” the studio captioned the post.
Warner Bros. also shared the news on TikTok, posting a video of Sally and Gillian dancing and sipping their midnight margaritas. “Me and the girls finding out Practical Magic 2 is happening,” the text read.

Who is in the Practical Magic 2 cast?
On June 13, 2024, Kidman confirmed to People that she and Bullock will be returning as the Owens sisters.
She told the publication with a laugh, “Yes I will be in it. And Sandy will be in it. And that’s that. There’s a lot more to tell which is why we go, ‘OK, this is kind of interesting now to be able to do this.’”
“[We] found a way in,” she quipped.
In July 2025, Evan Rachel Wood cleared up rumors about a potential return as Kylie Owens, saying in her Instagram Stories that she would not be in the sequel.
“I am getting asked about this a lot, so I’ll just clear it up now,” she wrote. “I was not asked to come back and be in the #PracticalMagic sequel.”
Woods says she reached out to express interest in returning, but was not offered a role.
“I offered my services, even if it was one scene or one line,” she continued. “I was told they are recasting. I am sorry to disappoint the fans. It was not in my control or my choice. I would have happily rejoined my sisters.”
In a November 2025 conversation with Ariana Grande for Interview magazine, Kidman offered new details about filming the sequel and confirmed additional cast members. Speaking about her current work, she said, “I produce and then star in a show called Lioness, which I’m doing right now, but we shot the sequel to Practical Magic over the summer in London, which was so fun.”
Kidman continued, “Sandy Bullock and I, and then Joey King and Maisie [Williams]—we had an incredible cast.”
She said they became very close: “I have such a strong relationship with all those women, so I felt protected and loved. It was just very, very safe.”
Later in the conversation, Kidman reflected on returning to the story after so many years: “And to come back to something so many years later and go, ‘We’re still able to get this movie made at a big big studio like Warner’s,’ and that Sandy and I were able to produce it and get it made, is insane.”
In April 2026, Bullock also opened up about how important scheduling was for her to be able to join the cast again. Filming happened while they were off from school and could join her on set.

“I’m not going to sacrifice my time with my kids,” Sandra said during a panel at CNBC’s Changemakers Summit. “They’d be happy if I was gone, I would not.”
She continued, “I do not do my best work if my children are struggling or if they need something and I can’t facilitate it. I’m raising my children, not anybody else.”
Bullock admitted that she has the “luxury” of controlling her schedule while “so many people don’t.”
“I understand that grief and that angst when you are at work, going, ‘I’m not where I need to be right now. I’m here being performative and doing my job,’” she said.
What has the cast said about the Practical Magic sequel?
Kidman and Bullock appeared at CinemaCon in April 2026 and shared some details about the upcoming movie, according to Deadline. Kidman said that fans should expect “midnight margaritas, jumping off the roof and also have our past catching up with us. We have our destinies, and the family. I think it’s going to be really, really fun.”
Bullock, meanwhile, said that filming Practical Magic again “felt like we came back to a home that we once lived in.” She continued, “We rebuilt the original house on the cliff. We filled that house with many old and new characters that you’ll love and brought Alice Hoffman’s Book of Magic to life.”
“Home is what this is,” Kidman added, “and getting to return to these characters that have been so loved and so shared, it really has been magical. And being back together, it just clicked.”
What will Practical Magic 2 be about?
The original Practical Magic follows sisters Sally and Gillian Owens who were orphaned as kids and raised by their aunts Francis (Stockard Channing) and Jet (Dianne Wiest), who teach them the ways of witchcraft. But a curse placed on their bloodline, which causes any man that an Owens woman loves to die, causes Sally and Gillian swear off magic in their adult lives. However, some sticky situations lead the sisters right back to casting spells in order to save their lives. The film is based on the same-name book by Alice Hoffman.
On Jan. 24, 2025, Deadline reported that Oscar winner Susanne Bier was in negotiations to direct. Bier is a favorite of both the stars, who have worked with her on various other projects: Bier directed Bullock in Netflix’s Bird Box, and Kidman for the series The Undoing and miniseries The Perfect Couple.
Deadline’s April 2026 report revealed that the movie “reintroduces sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, part of a multi-generational family of witches, cursed to be loveless for centuries, as they attempt to break a spell by confronting dark secrets and sacrificing for each other.” The outlet also shared that the yet-to-be-released trailer, promises the return to the Owens house. “Everyone we love dies a really horrible death,” Sally and Gilliam tell a character played by Lee Pace. “It’s not great for the Tinder bio.”
Has production started?
Yes! On July 18, 2025 Kidman shared a clip from behind-the-scenes on set. In the brief moment, she and Bullock are standing by a fake grave in maxi dresses, with Kidman wearing her iconic strawberry blonde wig from the film. They embrace and smile, even after the scene appears to end.
“The witches are back,” Kidman wrote in the caption. “Owens sisters’ first day on set!”
She offered an update on Sept. 13, 2025 announcing that production had wrapped. The star shared a clip in which she and Bullock are walking together through a golden field in warm summer light, laughing and holding hands.
Kidman wrote in the caption, “That’s a wrap on #PracticalMagic2! Thank you to the cast & crew for all your magic ✨”
