Nick Reiner made his first court appearance in Los Angeles Wednesday after being formally charged with murder after the deaths of his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner.

Nick, accompanied by a team of three lawyers including Alan Jackson, entered the courtroom clad in blue sleeveless vest and shackles, where he was seated behind glass. The *Being Charlie* co-writer stayed silent for a majority of the appearance, only speaking when the judge asked him if he was okay waiving his right to a speedy arraignment. He simply responded, "Yes, your honor."

The brief court hearing ended with Nick not entering a plea and the judge ordering Nick to be held without bail pending an arraignment, scheduled for Jan. 7.

In brief remarks to reporters outside the courthouse, Jackson said there were "very complex and serious issues associated with this case" that needed time to be examined. He urged the public and the media not to "rush to judgement" and left before taking any questions.

Nick is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of his parents, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced Tuesday afternoon. He faces a special allegation that he personally used a dangerous and deadly weapon, a knife.

"Prosecuting cases involving family violence are some of the most challenging and heart-wrenching we face because of the intimate and often brutal nature of the crimes," Hochman said in a statement. "Rob Reiner was one of the greatest filmmakers of his generation. His murder and his wife of more than 35 years, Michele Singer Reiner's murder, are shocking and tragic. We owe it to their memory to pursue justice and accountability for the lives that were taken."

If convicted, Nick faces life in state prison without the possibility of parole, or the death penalty.

Rob and Michele were found dead at their Brentwood, Calif., home on Sunday afternoon. Romy Reiner, the couple's youngest child, was the first person to enter the grisly scene at her parents' home.

Romy reportedly arrived with her roommate and entered the house, where she found her filmmaker father's body and then fled, not knowing that her mother was also dead inside, per *The New York Times*. Her roommate was reportedly the one to call 911. Paramedics later informed Romy that her mother, who was a photographer, was also dead after they arrived on the scene, the outlet reported.

Although Nick lived with his parents on the property, he wasn't located until authorities found him Sunday evening in Exposition Park, where he was arrested without incident and taken into custody Monday morning.

Nick was originally scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, but the hearing was canceled as he was not yet medically cleared to appear. Jackson previously told reporters outside Los Angeles Superior Court. Jackson, who has represented Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey, did not give any additional details about Nick's planned defense at the time.

In addition to Nick and Romy, Rob and Michele — who got married in 1989 after meeting while Rob was directing *When Harry Met Sally* — have another son, Jake. Rob is also the father of Tracy Reiner, whom he adopted during his marriage to actress and director Penny Marshall.

In a statement to *Variety* after the news of the deaths, the Reiner family said, "We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time."**
