Heather Graham revealed she was advised against taking her role in Boogie Nights by Dr. Drew Pinsky and Adam Carolla
Despite initial concerns, the 1997 film received critical acclaim and earned Graham an MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Performance
Mark Wahlberg also hesitated to join the film, fearing it might exploit him, but later credited it for advancing his career
Heather Graham was advised against taking one of her most notable roles.
In an interview with Jesse Tyler Ferguson on the Dinner's On Me podcast, Graham revisited her 1997 film, Boogie Nights, which followed a cast of characters in the adult entertainment industry in the 1970s. Graham starred as Rollergirl, a porn starlet who wears roller skates, alongside Mark Wahlberg and Burt Reynolds as porn star Dirk Diggler and porn filmmaker Jack Horner, respectively.
Though Graham, 56, admitted that a film like Boogie Nights was less likely to be judged if it were made today, she noted, "at that time it was kind of on the border of like, 'Oh, maybe you shouldn't be doing that. That's like creepy.' "

Ferguson agreed the film "felt risky," and Graham revealed she was actually advised against it by Dr. Drew Pinsky and Adam Carolla. She said she made an appearance on their show, Loveline, which began as a radio call-in show before transitioning to a TV adaptation on MTV from 1996 to 2000.
"I remember him giving me a really hard time, like, that's gonna be a terrible idea," Graham recalled. "He was basically saying like, you know, it sounds really like exploitative or whatever. You know? And then later he apologized."
Despite its controversial subject matter, the film was ultimately well-received and still holds a Metacritic score of 86. Graham ended up winning an MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Performance for the film, and Boogie Nights also received three Academy Award nominations.

However, Wahlberg, 54, previously admitted that he was nervous the film would be "the next level of exploiting me" after his 1992 Calvin Klein underwear ad.
“When I first heard about the film and the subject matter, it was not appealing to me,” he told Cigar Aficionado, noting that despite his reluctance to audition for the film, his agents "kept pushing" him to give it a chance.

“Burt Reynolds ended up playing Jack Horner,” he said, noting “[Robert] De Niro was attached at one point, Sydney Pollack was attached, Sean Penn — you know, a lot of really talented people circling this movie.”
“So I read the first 25-30 pages, and I kind of put it down. I was like this could be something great, or this could be absolutely terrible," he continued. Ultimately, he said the film "kind of set things in motion" for him.
